My husband flew into Chicago, Illinois. He told the Dollar rental agent he did not want insurance or any other extra services. My husband has a strong French accent. The agent asked my husband what country he was from and told him because he was not from the USA he could not refuse insurance or roadside service and several other charges. My husband explained to him that he is married to a citizen, legally in the USA, and has American car insurance. The employee refused to rent the car to my husband if he did not pay the insurance and several other charges like roadside assistance. Over the past year and a half, my husband who is a professional BMX racer, has made monthly trips across the USA and has used several different rental companies and has never had this issue. NEVER! Unfortunately we have discovered people are very quick to take advantage of his strong accent and lack of knowledge about his rights here in our country. I immediately called Dollar upon discovery of the charges. I spoke to the corporate office and was told unfortunately there was no proof that the sales person told my husband that the insurance and charges were required to rent the car, however, she did admit that insurance was not obligatory. It was a lengthy conversation which finally ended in the corporate employee agreeing to only pay a small portion as a refund ($37 on an extra $124 charge) which was ridiculous. She sounded as if this wasn’t her first conversation of this nature so I got online and discovered this happens to a great deal of people. I finally tracked down that you were leading a class action suit against Dollar. I’m interested. Please let me know the status. If you are not, I am disgusted enough with their practices (especially after reading how common it is), that I am going to filing against them in small claims court if necessary. I look forward to hearing from you.
