Rented a full size sedan from Dollar via Expedia. Picked up at Houston airport (IAH) on Oct 13, 2014 . At the counter, was told it was mandatory Texas law to buy liability insurance from them. It effectively raised my total cost from $216.24 at booking time to actual $345 . I have US driver license, driver insurance and had rented several times in other states. My own auto insurance covers liability and along with credit card covered collision. So I usually denied extra insurance from rental company. But since that guy of Dollar used Texas law as excuse, I believed him.
Now only when I am preparing next trip to different state and booked car rental, did I start to wonder if that was true in Texas. Found out he was lying to push the sale. Anyway, comparing to other guys on this thread who was charged afterwards, I was fooled upfront and agreed the charge. So not bothered it too much by, just am imprinted with poor impression on Dollar / Thrifty. Seems the State of Texas should do something to such guys.
