- I rented a car from Dollar 2/12/16 – 2/15 /16, where I declined additional rental insurance at the counter. At the time, my card was charged $366, and I asked about the high amount ( originally quoted $172), and was told the large amount was owed to my using a debit card for the transaction. I was assured that the amount would be returned back to my account upon returning the car. I did indeed sign the rental agreement at that time. Upon returning the car and examining my receipt, I saw the additional charges of 85.47 for the LDW insurance and attempted to discuss this error at the car return. I was informed that it was ” Presidents Day” and no one could reverse this fee. I then called the 1800 number and was told the same thing. At that point, I wanted to make my flight in time, and elected to call once I returned home. I called 2/17 and spoke with Ruth, who told me I signed the rental agreement accepting the LDW fee at car pick up. This was factually true, as I noted above, and I explained as such. Then, Ruth stated I was fortunate to have had the additional insurance, and should I have been in an accident I would have had full coverage. She also added that I should have been actually been charged an additional day of rental insurance, and had again actually been fortunate to avoid a full four days of LDW rental charge. I thanked her for her concern, and continued to assert that I did NOT elect this coverage, would have accepted the liability should I been in an accident, and requested a full refund. I was then offered half the fee in return, which I declined , since I EXPLICITLY declined rental car coverage at the time of rental. At that time, Ruth declined to forward my complaint to an additional Dollar employee or superior, stating she was ” in sole charge ” of billing decisi ons. She also declined to provide her last name , citing security reasons, and stated if I did not accept the half refund she could not help me further. I declined the half refund, hung up, and emailed the parent company a complaint as detailed here. I also redialed the Dollar rent a car main number to speak to an administrator, but hung up after 27 minutes on hold. As of today, I have not received a reply email or had any further contact with Dollar Rent a car.
