I rented a car from THRIFTY at the Boston Airport on 12/22/2012. I clearly stated that I did not want the additional damage waiver insurance. The attendant quickly led me through computer screens (difficult to actually read without reading glasses) explaining each one as I checked and signed. He told me at the signature page that I was agreeing to the added charge for the full tank of gas only. Upon returning the car Dec 30, I noticed the bill being significantly higher than anticipated. I objected, but was told by the manger that I had signed the agreement including additional insurance and there was nothing he could do. As we needed to get to our airplanes, I could not take the time to press the point with him. I have never purchased additional insurance on car rentals, and there is no reason I would have decided to at this time. I sent a letter to Thrifty on January 6. They apologized for the “misunderstanding”, but stated that they “must respectfully decline [my] request for reimbursement” as I had signed the contract. I responded January 25 that they missed my point, but have heard nothing since. The original estimate given by Thrifty on October 13, including tax and fees was $395.09. Add the fuel charge of $58.98 gives an expected total of around $454. I was charged $720.28. I saw the article in the New York Times on April 6 regarding others who have experienced similar treatment.
